Listen to “What do we need to meditate?” on Spreaker. The three absolute must haves for meditation are:
• a body
• a mind
• breath
If you watch what’s happening in any one of those three, you’re meditating.
What you don’t need is special equipment:
– Shawls or clothing
– Bells, bowls, gongs,
– Malas, incense
– Cushions, benches
– Meditation apps
Now I have all of these things and multiples of them. I have shawls of varying thickness and depending on the season, I’ll choose the one I use. Similarly, I have lots of cushions and bowls and malas and I enjoy them, in fact I love them. But I don’t need them. When I’m travelling on a bus or train or plane, I’ll meditate in whatever clothes I’m wearing, whether that’s a sweat shirt and regular pants or a formal blazer and dress pants.
It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing, you can meditate in it.
All of the meditation equipment helps turn meditation into a pleasant and consistent habit. But you don’t really NEED any of it to meditate.
Reminder, the three things you absolutely must have to meditate are:
• a body
• a mind
• breath
If you watch what’s happening in any one of those three, you’re meditating. You don’t need to do anything else.
It really is that simple.
